Catholic university grants honorary doctorate to Pope Tawadros II

The Pazmany Peter Catholic University granted an honorary doctorate to Pope Tawadros II, leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, on Monday.

Zsolt Semjen, the deputy prime minister for church relations, told the press after the event that Hungary-Egypt relations were excellent not only in economic and political terms but also in the fields of culture, and intellectual and spiritual affairs. This has also been demonstrated by Pope Tawadros II’s visit to Hungary, he added.

Semjen expressed thanks to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi for supporting Christians and for “the political stability, security and development witnessed in Egypt”.

Tawadros II thanked the university for the honorary doctorate, saying that it was also a recognition of the Coptic church’s activities in Egypt and throughout the world.
