Cardinal Erdo: Pope Francis’s visit was encouragement from God

Hungary owes God its thanks for using Pope Francis's visit to the country to encourage and strengthen the Hungarian church and people, Cardinal Peter Erdo, the Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, said on Monday.

Giving thanks expresses the essence of the existence of Christians, Erdo said at a mass for the organisers of the papal visit, volunteers and media staff.

“At this holy mass, we especially give thanks to God that Pope Francis turned to us with pastoral love, and really wanted to pay attention to us, instead of seeing the visit as an opportunity to deal with other matters, no matter how important those may be,” Erdo said.

Michael Wallace Banach, the apostolic nuncio, delivered a message of thanks from the pontiff. He said the entire country could be proud of the success of the visit.

In a welcome speech at a reception after the mass, Bishop Andras Veres, the head of the Conference of Hungarian Catholic Bishops, asked that God reward and bless those involved in the papal visit.
