Budapest Zoo records impressive 2024

Last year, Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden had more than 1.1 million visitors. This is the highest number since 2003.

This does not include the number of visitors to the mini-zoo on Margaret Island, which is also part of the zoo. This was visited by a total of 200,000 people. One fifth of the zoo’s visitors were foreigners.

Budapest Zoo is home to 646 animal species, including 103 species of mammals, 106 of birds, 84 of reptiles, 20 of amphibians, 174 different species of fish and 156 invertebrates. The mini-zoo on Margaret Island is home to 19 bird species and 3 mammal species. Projects realised with the support of the zoo’s own foundation include the expansion of the enclosure for endangered Asian wild dogs, the renovation of the prairie dog enclosure and the construction of the wombat castle. Wombats are rarely seen outside Australia, but at Budapest Zoo they are bred with great success. The outdoor enclosures of the Biodome are now also inhabited, where zoo visitors can observe camels, African maned sheep, buffalo and grey cattle. After a break of several years, brown bears can once again be seen in Budapest. Hargita and Csángó live in their modernised enclosure.

As part of the VietnAmazing campaign, which promotes the endangered wildlife of the Southeast Asian country, species native to Vietnam arrived at the zoo in the Hungarian capital. Three of the bald ibis chicks hatched in 2023 were released as part of the reintroduction programme for this bird species in Andalusia. The wildlife rescue programme was also successful.
