An alternative for young people
This is according to the news portal index.hu, based on information from the southern Hungarian metropolis. The Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged has been teaching Mandarin to a total of 430 children and young people in ten primary and secondary schools in the city since September. The institute also offers courses at three technical colleges of the Szeged Vocational Training Center for an initial 90 trainees.
The first BYD electric cars are due to roll off the production line in Szeged in around a year’s time, at the end of 2025. According to the Minister of Economy, BYD will pay average wages of around 1,800-2,000 euros per month. According to index.hu, Márton Nagy is said to have quoted these figures at a residents’ forum recently. The minister wanted to present the Chinese investor as a positive example because its involvement not only improves the infrastructure in the region, but also raises wages. As a comparison, Nagy cited an average wage of 1,600 euros for the Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét. While young people from Szeged used to look for well-paid work in Budapest, Transdanubia or abroad, BYD now offers them an alternative.
