Alleged drug dealer operating on dark web detained with FBI help
The National Bureau of Investigation of Hungary’s Rapid Response Police (KR NNI) said on Thursday that the investigation had been started several years ago after the FBI reached out to Hungarian authorities with information about a Hungarian citizen selling significant amounts of drugs on various markets with the help of the dark web.
In cooperation with FBI, the KR NNI has used state of the art cyber investigation technologies to monitor dark web markets in order to identify and hunt down the criminal.
The man was allegedly selling synthetic drugs, cocaine and heroin to 16 countries including the US, Canada, Serbia, Australia, Belgium, Sweden, Saud Arabia, Italy, the UK, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Austria, Ireland, Estonia and Spain between 2021 and 2023. The 35 year old man never physically handled the drugs, he acted only as a middle man on the dark web, making a profit from a turnover of around 100 million forints (EUR 250,000) which he used for buying property.
He was detained in Vertesszolos, northern Hungary, on June 11.
