Agriculture ministry: Extra support for field rangers at southern border

Villages in southern Hungary near the border will receive extra financial support from the government to enhance field ranger services near the southern borders to cope with increased migratory pressure, Minister of Agriculture Istvan Nagy said on Friday.

The number of illegal entrants and attempts at illegal entry have increased considerably on Hungary’s Schengen border, the minister said in a statement, and the government has decided to provide over 170 million forints (EUR 47.6m) to local villages most affected.

“Increased migratory pressure has not only placed an extra burden on law enforcement authorities but also enhanced demand for the protection of arable land near the southern border,” he said. “In view of this, the strengthening of field ranger services has become necessary in the most affected villages,” he added.
