Agriculture minister welcomes parliament banning local councils, mayors from introducing land tax

Acceding to a petition by farmers seeking to prevent mayors and local councils from introducing land taxes, parliament approved a government-sponsored law on Tuesday which bans such taxes, Istvan Nagy, the minister of agriculture, said on Facebook.

“We considered this important because … the left wing mayor of Hodmezovasarhely imposed a land tax on local farmers in the current times of war, following an epidemic and drought,” he said. “If the left wing does this in one location, then they would be ready to do it in other locations where there is a left-wing mayor,” he added.

The alliance of Hungarian farmers and chamber of agriculture took joint action to prevent this, and their petition had been signed by more than 120,000 people by the end of March, he said.

“The newly approved bill was prepared by the government in cooperation with farmers’ associations,” he said. “We are protecting farmers’ interests at home and in Brussels, too,” he added.
