Agriculture Minister: Hungary, Moldova ties offering new opportunities

Ties between Hungary and Moldova offer "great investment opportunities", the agriculture minister said in Chisinau on Thursday, adding that Hungary had a vested interest in Moldova's speedy European Union integration.

At talks with his Moldovan counterpart, Vladimir Bolea, Istvan Nagy noted that agriculture is a strategic sector in both countries. He said there was room for expansion in agricultural ties, in cooperation “on the issue of Ukrainian agricultural products”, on irrigation know-how, precision agricultural technology and drones and on the matter of drought-resilient plants, according to a ministry statement.

During its European Union presidency starting in July, Hungary will work to set up a process protecting the producers and the market, Nagy said. “The primary interest is to facilitate market access.”

Hungary will also provide an opportunity for Moldova to “talk about their thoughts and concers” in front of EU agricultural ministers, he added.

The ministers also signed an agreement, which Nagy said would ensure more security for Hungarian agri-companies already in the country “and open the gates for further investments”.

Nagy also met Deputy Prime Minister Dumitru Alaiba, the minister for economic development and digitalisation. At the talks, they said economic developments involving new, precision and digital technology offered vast opportunities, and pledged to protect and boost investments between the two countries.

Talks are slated to resume in Budapest in the near future, the ministry statement said.
