Coronavirus - 115 deaths, 8,578 new infections

Public health centre: Epidemic subsiding

The fifth wave of the coronavirus epidemic peaked at the end of January and has been stagnating and subsiding since, an official of the National Public Health Centre (NNK) said on Thursday.

The concentration of traces of the virus is still stagnating at high level in waste water but the number of registered infections has been continually decreasing, by 13 percent on the fifth week and 32 percent on the 6th week, which shows a downward trend, head of the epidemiology department Agnes Galgoczi told public news channel M1. Based on current data, another rapid increase in case numbers is not expected, she added.

Over the past two weeks, most infections were registered among people aged 30 to 50, whereas previously the majority of new infections had been children, she said.

115 deaths, 8,578 new infections

Altogether 115 patients died of a Covid-related illness over the past 24 hours, while 8,578 new coronavirus infections were registered, koronavirus.gov.hu said on Thursday.

So far 6,384,828 people have received a first jab, while 6,146,028 have been double-jabbed. Fully 3,776,200 Hungarians have received a booster shot.

The number of active infections stands at 202,738, while hospitals are treating 5,062 Covid-19 patients, 206 of whom are intubated on a ventilator.

Since the first outbreak, 1,738,944 have been registered with the virus, while 42,966 deaths have been recorded. Fully 1,493,240 people have made a recovery.
