DK on World Cancer Day: People left in the lurch

4 February is World Cancer Day. However, if you look at the Hungarian data, there is no reason to rejoice, writes the opposition party DK.
7. February 2025 11:11

According to a recent report by the EU Commission, Hungary recorded the highest number of cancer deaths among 29 countries analysed. This figure exceeds the EU average by almost a third. Risk factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and obesity remain worryingly present. Participation in so-called screening programmes is again alarmingly low and has fallen even further in recent years.

According to DK, this data clearly proves that Fidesz has failed Hungarians by dismantling the health sector and neglecting screening programmes. Many preventable deaths weigh heavily on the prime minister’s mind, as the healthcare system receives hardly any money, screening programmes are inadequate and the government does nothing to promote a healthy lifestyle among the population. According to DK, an immediate, comprehensive healthcare reform is needed to ensure adequate screening, modern treatments and real prevention. Politicians must stop playing with people’s lives!
