Only one in four saves regularly

A representative study commissioned by CIB Bank shows that only a quarter of Hungarians are able to put money aside on a regular basis.

The study reveals significant differences in the population’s savings behaviour. While 62% of adults say they save money at certain intervals, only 27% are able to set aside part of their income on a regular basis. 28% save occasionally, 7% only for major expenses and 38% said they do not save at all.

The wealth situation also varies greatly. Only 6% of respondents have savings of more than 5 million forints (around 12,200 euros). A further 15% have HUF 1-5 million set aside, another 23% have less than HUF 1 million in savings, while 41% have no savings at all. 15% of respondents were unwilling or unable to provide information on their savings.

Residents of the capital and respondents with a higher level of education are in a better position. 21% of respondents with a higher level of education can save more than 50,000 forints a month. Looking at the amount of money saved regularly in relation to monthly income, 28% are able to save up to 10% of their income, 16% put aside more than 10%, and half of them even save more than a fifth. Hungarians like to make their own savings decisions. 41% of regular savers rely solely on their own knowledge when making financial decisions.
