US ambassador addresses conference on CE Europe

Freedom of religion and speech are genetically ingrained for Americans, US Ambassador David B. Cornstein told an international conference in Budapest focusing on central and eastern Europe and religion on Tuesday.

The conference dubbed Hammer, Sickle and Cross has been organised by the Danube Institute.

Michael von Habsburg-Lothringen, president of the Mindszenty Foundation, told the event that in the fight between good and evil, the evil appeared to be winning in the form of national socialist and communist dictatorships during the 20th century.

Cardinal and Prince Primate Jozsef Mindszenty, Archbishop of Esztergom, emerged as a national hero in Hungary, not only for Catholics but also for Protestants, he added.
