Speaker meets president of Philippines Senate

Speaker of Parliament Laszlo Kover met Juan Miguel Fernandez Zubiri, president of the Senate of the Philippines, in his office, and they discussed bilateral ties, parliamentary cooperation and international challenges faced by the two countries, parliament's press office said in a statement on Thursday.

Kover said Hungary and the Philippines aim to expand their cooperation to several new areas on the basis of their shared values, their belief in democracy, Christian mores and national sovereignty, the statement said.

Cooperation between the two countries’ parliaments serves as a strong pillar of fast-developing and diverse relations, and Zubiri’s first official visit to Budapest is expected to give a further boost to those relations, Kover added.

This year, the Philippines and Hungary are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, Kover noted. The Philippines is a key partner for Hungary in South East Asia and a cornerstone of its strategy of opening to the East, the speaker added.

Kover and Zubiri identified further cooperation possibilities in agriculture, water management, the installation of irrigation systems, and education.
