Government bolstering political presence in Sahel region

The importance of Africa's Sahel region is growing in its humanitarian, migration, security and economic aspects, so the government is strengthening its political presence there, the foreign ministry official in charge of aiding persecuted Christians, said on Tuesday.

The Hungary Helps programme operates humanitarian and economic development schemes in several countries of the region, and lately it has provided a humanitarian donation to a Catholic Church school in Niger, Tristan Azbej, the state secretary, said on Facebook.

Hungary has also bolstered its consular presence in Sahel, while Hungary and Niger signed a defence cooperation pact last week, he said.

Also, Hungary is seeking to secure a humanitarian response when it comes to handling the regional effects of growing violence in Sudan, he added.

Meanwhile, Laszlo Eduard Mathe has been appointed ministerial commissioner responsible for foreign policy coordination of activities in the sub-Saharan region, Azbej noted.
