Problem with the engines

The low-cost airline's operating profit fell significantly in the first half of the year.

According to management, this is primarily due to problems in connection with the ongoing investigation into the engines and developments in the Middle East conflict. The aviation group with Hungarian roots achieved an operating profit of 349.2 million euros, compared to 522.9 million euros in the same period of the previous year. At 33.3 million passengers, slightly more passengers were carried than in the first half of 2023, with an average seat load factor of 92.4%.

As of 30 September, 41 aircraft remained on the ground. This number is expected to be between 40 and 45 aircraft in the next 18 months, which is a reduction compared to the originally expected 50 aircraft. CEO József Váradi said that the problem is expected to continue for about two years, limiting the company’s capacity in the longer term. In addition to the problems with the Pratt & Whitney engines, the conflict in the Middle East also had a negative impact on business activities. Wizz Air’s share price has fallen by 37% this year.
