Two BYD compact cars coming
The new car plant in Szeged is still in the construction phase, but series production of vehicles from the Dolphin and Atto 3 model families is expected to start there by the end of 2025. The Chinese manufacturer emphasises that the electric cars produced in Hungary are exempt from the punitive tariffs imposed on China by the EU Commission.
BYD has risen to become the market leader in its home country, where it was able to oust VW and the electric car manufacturer Tesla from the top spot in its segment. In the EU, however, the Chinese company’s market share for all-electric vehicles is still in the single-digit range. This is set to change following the start of production in Szeged. The Chinese are reportedly already preparing a second plant in Turkey for the European market.
