After the artist’s death in 1954, her home, known as the ‘Blue House’, was converted into a museum. However, the majority of her personal possessions – including 6,000 photographs – remained locked away in a bathroom for 50 years. After the personal archive was opened in 2003, curator Pablo Ortiz Monasterio selected 241 of these photographs. Since 2009, almost 1 million people in 20 cities have seen the collection.

The exhibition is divided into six thematic areas: The first section, ‘Roots’ documents her family’s photographic tradition – both her grandfather and father were professional photographers. The second section, ‘Blue House’, shows different phases of the artist’s life. The third section is dedicated to politics, revolutions and Diego Rivera. The fourth section, ‘Broken Body’, focuses on her convalescence after her car accident. The fifth section shows important people in Kahlo’s life, while the last section presents works by well-known photographers, including the Hungarian Martin Munkácsi and Brassai (Gyula Halász).

The exhibition, organised by the Frida Kahlo Museum and the Anahuacalli Museum, is open until 12 January.
