The exhibition ‘Munkácsy – The Story of a Global Success’ on the occasion of the 180th anniversary of his birth and 125th anniversary of his death presents more than 100 works of art, archive photographs, documents and cultural artefacts that provide a deeper insight into the artist’s life and his incomparably rich oeuvre.

The aim of the exhibition is to present Munkácsy’s artistic success story and to illuminate his well-known works from a new perspective. The exhibition presents not only the main works, but also rarely or never shown paintings, masterpieces from private collections and loans from abroad.

These works shed light on the social and cultural factors that influenced his career in the 1870s and 1880s and contributed to his fame and the development of the Munkácsy cult, which continues to this day.

These days, the Christ Trilogy – one of Munkácsy’s most important works – is being moved from the Déri Museum in Debrecen to Budapest.
