Hungary foreign minister stands by Nabucco and South Stream
Sunday, 26 October 2008
Beijing. October 25 (MTI) - Hungary's foreign minister, participating in the 7th Europe-Asia Meeting (ASEM) in Beijing on Saturday, said both the Europe-backed Nabucco natural gas pipeline and the Russian-backed South Stream pipeline had the country's support.

Hungary is doing its utmost to seek diversification of both sources and the transit of gas, said Kinga Goncz.

She said the situation in Georgia signalled the need to speed up the process of getting the necessary governmental agreement for the Nabucco project to go ahead.

Hungary's initiative to connect up the region's gas and electricity networks is equally important from the point of view of strengthening energy security, she added.

Russia remains the main supplier of gas to Hungary, she noted. Given its historical role in Hungary's energy supply, its importance will remain, while new provisions will arrive via the South Stream, said Goncz.

She noted that Hungary almost wholly relies on gas imports and therefore securing supplies is of primary importance.

Balancing the needs of the environment, as well as obtaining cheap energy in order to keep the economy competitive requires looking increasingly towards renewable energy as well as boosting Hungary's nuclear power capacity, she said.
