Tattoo You

Tattoos have become extremely popular over the last decade, and not just with sailors, motorcycle gangs and rebels without causes. It is now the kindergarten teachers, family doctors, bus drivers, suburban mothers and florists who are adorning themselves with permanent body art. Due to such a huge demand, tattoo parlors are popping up all over the world to serve their ink thirsty customers. The world has gone tattoo crazy.

While tattoos may the latest fashion, it is one of the most ancient forms of art.  The oldest tattooed body known to date is over 5,000 years old and was discovered in the Austrian Alps back in 1991. In those days, however, they were meant to serve a purpose other than just body art. In Borneo, for example, the women from the Dayak tribe would get tattoos on their forearms that were symbolic of a particular skill. This mark served as an advertisement to all available men that a sexy and skilled woman was ready for marriage. Now try and imagine such a system today where a woman decides to change her career ten times. She would probably end up with her arms full of crossed out symbols and no marriage proposals.

Tattoos are currently the most popular among members of the Generation X, who are 25-34 years of age. Perhaps the most famous of this group is Angelina Jolie, who has 11 tattoos. Actually, it is more like ten tattoos since she had the name of her ex husband, Billy Bob Thornton, removed from her left shoulder. Movie studios applauded the move since the special effects guys in Tomb Raider went to quite a bit of trouble to ensure that it was always covered while she was running around collecting treasure.

When all of the dust settles and the skin heals, people are left with reactions that tend to go one of two ways. Either they are happy with their new tattoo and rush to show their family of friends, or they suffer from a terrible hangover and realize that they have made a very big mistake. When the “Oh no!” reaction happens, then the person is faced with a procedure far more costly and painful than the actual tattoo itself: the removal. One method is called dermabrasion, where the skin is vigorously sanded like a piece of wood. Another is cryosurgery, which is where they deep freeze the tattoo before trying to pull it off. Let’s not forget the lasers and scalpels that others like to use. So, before you go out and get yourself a tattoo, take some time to think about it. Make sure that you are happy with your choice and that a part of your body doesn’t end up on the infamous and very real web-site called www.badtattoos.com.

...permanent...?
I don't know about others but the word "permanent" just gives me the creeps. I mean something that seems a good idea at the moment might not be all that great from 5 years from now. And as for the meaning of tatoos changing over time, in Japan you'll have a hard time getting into a gym or bath if you have them. And I mean it, you will not be allowed to enter. Tatoos have a whole other meaning wherever you go.

Skin ink
For me, tattoos are for those who seek to differentiate themselves somehow. It is foolish, however, to think that some ink under the skin is the way to go about accomplishing this.
