Volán sticks with Chinese bus buy
Saturday, 13 March 2010

State-owned bus line Volán has decided to purchase 60 vehicles from China’s Xiamen, despite the assessment of the previously closed-out Alfa Busz’s tender, the company announced last week. The owner of Alfa Busz appealed the exclusion decision and was granted the right to rejoin the process by the Public Procurement Arbitration Court (KDB).
Initially Volán argued that the turning capabilities of the buses manufactured by Alfa were poor, but this reasoning was deemed unfounded by the court in January after the bus line tossed out Alfa’s application for the first time. The Hungarian Bus Manufacturer Association issued a statement during the legal process saying that accepting Alfa’s tender application would be cheaper and offer Volán better technical specifications. The two tenders in dispute have now been awarded to Xiamen.
