 20 August race axed
The Red Bull Air Race in Budapest, which was supposed to take place on 20 August has been cancelled this year due to lengthy delays in the permissions process, the World Air Sports Association announced last Tuesday. Ending a six-year tradition of racing in the Hungarian capital, the competition’s world champion will be crowned after the now final race in Germany on 8 August.

Hungarian football league champions Debrecen VSC confirmed last Thursday that its players had recently been interviewed in a Europe-wide UEFA investigation into match fixing. Nemzeti Sport reported, without naming its source, that UEFA officials were most interested in a Champions League group stage match that Debrecen lost 3-4 at home to Italian side Fiorentina last October.  You looked particularly comfortable in the
opening laps – were you pushing hard?
I was
definitely pushing! But the car felt so good at the start of the race that it
wasn’t difficult to push to the limit. I’ve said it before, but we’ve really
transformed this year’s car over the past six weeks. It’s now so well-balanced
and responsive that it just feels fantastic to drive – you can always trust it
and get something more out of it – and I was actually enjoying those early laps
because I was able to get into a nice rhythm. I think my start was almost
perfect, too.

 Bob Dent searches for some missing history.
When I first came to Budapest in the 1980s there was a memorial plaque on the façade of the Műcsarnok or Hall of Arts in Heroes’ Square. The plaque commemorated a massive workers’ demonstration of 1 September 1930. The marchers had passed through Heroes’ Square on their way to City Park. Hungary’s amateur Olympic and world champion and professional world champion boxer István “Kokó” Kovács will run for head of the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB), the leadership post of which will be vacant once current chief Pál Schmitt is inaugurated as Hungary’s new President. 
Hungary’s highest- seeded tennis player, Ágnes Szávay, has leapfrogged into the top 40 of the WTA rankings on the back of her second tournament championship in as many weeks. Szávay spent last week resting after her consecutive wins in Budapest’s and Prague’s 30+ degree weather. 
After having refereed two World Cup games during the group phase and one in the first round of the knockout stage to the satisfaction of all parties involved, Viktor Kassai and his Hungarian assistants Gábor Eros and Tibor Vámos continued their good performance during the semi-final, where in a friendly-like game Spain defeated Germany 1-0.
Zsolt Gajdos and his horse Doru from the village of Demecser in Szabolcs County won the National Gallop.
Playing alongside American Sloane Stephens at the Roland Garros in Paris, Tímea Babos became only the third Hungarian woman to win the trophy at the youth tournament of a tennis Grand Slam event. 
Cricket is not a sport commonly associated with Hungary. But the
Hungarian Cricket Association (HCA) is set to change our perceptions.
In just three years, the Association has established a national team, a
developing squad and even a national girls youth team. Cricket in
Hungary is expanding exponentially and the HCA has high hopes that in
years to come the national team will be able to compete on an
International level. I spoke with Mr. Andrew Leckonby, the Technical
Director of the organization, to find out exactly how the HCA plans to
achieve such an aspiration.
Sixteen
countries, forty members and one common interest... a good game of
footy! Budapest Celtics was set up thirteen years ago by a few expats
who were keen to play some competitive football in the city. The team
is now well established and plays matches on a weekly basis as part of
‘A Liga’ for the Budapest League.
Two months ago the Cowboys and the Wolves
fought an exciting battle for the Hungarian championship. In the rematch the
Wolves won confidently, leaving no doubt that they are in the race for the

Ronnie O'Sullivan secured his win against Mark J. Williams in the quarter-finals of the Snooker World Championships with a 147 maximum break. This being his ninth recorded maximum, Ronnie now leads the all-time list ahead of Stephen Hendry, who has eight. This excellent achievement will probably earn him an additional 157 000 pounds roughly the equivalent of 200 000 Euros.
