Hotel to break ground

ImageConstruction work is soon to begin on a new luxury spa hotel in Budapest's Jewish Quarter. The project to build a hotel on the site of the former Hungária Fürdo baths and Continental Hotel was announced last October. Now the developer, Zenia Hotel Ltd, will announce this week that it is ready to start construction work.

SCD pledges to march on

The SCD Group, which is behind several major projects in the Lake Balaton area, will not abandon any of its plans, despite the ongoing economic crisis. Spokesman Peter Elkan said SCD had 25 projects in the vicinity of the “Hungarian Sea”. He acknowledged that financing is currently more difficult, resulting in delays to some projects. Overall its 25 projects will construct 1.7 million sqm of new buildings.

Born Again

ImageIn every city buildings grow up next to each other over centuries: they are built on previous ones, one building makes way for another and a process of symbiosis can be observed.
Building complexes that are of particular interest to architectural historians are generally given a wide berth by  property developers because of the uncertainties involved in construction projects. Unlike new greenfield developments, with these projects nobody knows what the excavator shovel will hit or whether what was assumed to be a wooden beam ceiling will suddenly turn out to be a ferro-concrete one that needs to
be removed at considerable expense.
