Parking fees illegal, but still required |

Budapest City Council’s determination of the size of its parking fees and fines is illegal, according to a Constitutional Court ruling. The Court called upon lawmakers to regulate parking in the capital with a decree “appropriate to a constitutional state”, otherwise parking in the capital will become free as of 1 July, 2010. The court gave MPs and Budapest City Council until 30 June to amend the relevant laws, some of which need a two-thirds majority, and to alter the capital’s parking regulations. “Free parking would bring unimaginable chaos,” Socialist deputy mayor Csaba Horváth said of the court’s decision, adding that it will be tough to pass the necessary legislation due to the upcoming elections. Mayor Gábor Demszky said a standardised parking system could be a possible solution, something on which he and his colleagues are already working.
