Ties with Egypt talked up
Written by Robert Hodgson
Tuesday, 20 October 2009
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak met President László Sólyom and Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai during a three-day official visit that started last Monday. The aim of the trip was to strengthen economic ties and boost investment between the two countries.

Sólyom spoke at a Hungarian-Egyptian Business Forum organised by International Trade Development Hungary (ITDH) last Tuesday of a new chapter in Hungarian-Egyptian relations. Mubarak said Egypt was an attractive destination for Hungarian investors to plant their capital, as it had suffered only slightly from the effects of the global financial crisis.

Business

Bajnai and Mubarak discussed opportunities for strengthening business links, and said they planned to improve bilateral economic relations. Bajnai said Egypt’s cooperation in the European Nabucco gas pipeline project was very important. Egypt, which has abundant natural gas reserves, could help solve one of the major sticking points of the project: supply.

Politics

Mubarak expressed gratitude for Hungary’s support of an independent Palestinian state to exist peacefully alongside Israel. He also met opposition leader Viktor Orbán, who declared that it was in Hungary’s interests to strengthen ties with North African countries.

After Hungary, Mubarak travelled on to Slovenia and Croatia, and planned to round off his European tour with an official visit to Rome and a meeting with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
