Bangkok House - Flavour in the house

One of the best Thai restaurants in the capital is the ten-year-old Bangkok House in Só utca near the Great Market Hall (Nagycsarnok).

The summer roll for HUF 1,450 is a wonderfully light version of the familiar spring roll consisting of diced vegetables wrapped in noodles. Following this delicate introduction, diners can choose from one of the ten fixed menus which offer something for both meat eaters and vegetarians. The kitchen is flexible and allows requests to have, for example, the starter from menu one with the main course from menu nine.

The prices are also in order. A fixed menu consisting of a soup or starter and a main course and rice costs between HUF 1,300 and HUF 1,600.

The choices include sweet and sour fish soup, spring rolls, sour coconut chicken, sweet and sour pork and red curry chicken. The chicken is very tender, the vegetables are crispy and full of vitamins, and the red curry sauce is thick and creamy. The portions are also just right.

For a wider selection of dishes guests can simply open the main menu which contains everything from chicken, duck and beef to fish and seafood, such as Ho Mok Kai (steamed chicken in coconut milk with glass noodles) for HUF 2,250 or Ped Phad Krathiem (duck with garlic and vegetables) for HUF 2,450.

Guests should not pass up the desserts. The fried bananas will most likely be a real surprise to anyone already familiar with this dish from Chinese restaurants. At Bangkok House the fried bananas are not dripping with either oil or honey.

The latter is even served in a separate bowl so that guests can decide for themselves how sweet they would like the bananas. The tapioca pearls in coconut milk with lychees for HUF 850 is an interesting sight. The soft tapioca pearls are swimming in sweet, lukewarm coconut milk which forms a pleasant contrast to the cold lychees.

All in all Bangkok House offers, without any design frills, exactly what one would hope for in such a restaurant: traditional Thai cuisine of the highest quality.
