Central Europe’s first fig orchard has been planted on seven acres in Zala County, the managing director of the family venture, Endre Harcz, told news agency FH last week.
The family had got the idea based on the impressive yield of a few fig trees that they had planted earlier in a nearby village. “The hillside location is perfect because its microclimate provides warm enough temperature in winter for the figs to survive,” Harcz said. If successful it was hoped to plant more fig trees and other edible, non-native plants to create a fruit arboretum within a few years.
