Dionne Warwick, who has to date had more hits (56) than any other female vocalist in history with the exception of Aretha Franklin, graces the stage of the Palace of Arts this Thursday, 20 November.
Grace is the word too. The New Jersey-born legend’s versatile voice, if anything more multi-faceted than Franklin’s, lit up the sixties with its unique blend of force and delicacy with complete effortlessness.
Reviews of this tour suggest that the enchanting power of her vocal talent, who is now in her late 60s, remains intact.
Warwick famously gave life to the songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, the songwriting team that penned more than half of her hits, performing the definitive versions of classic pop songs with the unusual class and complexity of "Walk On By", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", "I Say A Little Prayer", "The Look of Love", and "I’ll Never Fall In Love Again". Gems from her post Bacharach-David pantheon of bitter sweet classics include "I Know I’ll Never Love This Way Again", "Heartbreaker" and "That’s What Friends Are For".
Now based in Brazil, Warwick has served as a Global Ambassador for UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) since 2002, suggesting that her soul is not only located in the vocal chords.
