The policing committee of Budapest
Municipal Council on Wednesday proposed to ask Mayor Gabor Demszky
to request a budget topup for the Budapest police force from the
central budget funds, similarly to the funds just requested for the

László Sólyom last Friday assured his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai that
Hungarian troops would be in Afghanistan
for the long haul during Karzai’s one-day visit to Budapest. “Hungary
is planning a long-term presence in Afghanistan
along with the international community,” Sólyom said following talks with

Even before
the 9 March referendum it was clear that the result, despite not automatically
leading to the fall of the government or the prime minister, would have
political consequences. The government was forced to back down following its
unexpectedly punishing defeat, particularly on the question of healthcare
