known personalities, according to a recent poll carried out by
Reader’s Digest magazine and published on Thursday. The poll involved interviewing 1,000 people about how much they
trusted 100 well-known Hungarian artists, sportspeople, writers, TV

Budapest, December 27 (MTI) – President Laszlo Solyom on
Thursday announced his decision not to sign into law the
government’s health reform legislation. The president said he would send the package back to MPs for
reconsideration. Solyom said he supported reforming the health-care system but
decried the lack of consensus between governing and opposition
parties as well as health-care workers on the reform plans. Solyom
said such large-scale changes in the health-care system should be
backed by impact studies and detailed analysis, which the current
bill lacked. He said it was unclear how much money would be invested
in improving efficiency and service standards. Continue »

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has been killed in a suicide attack as she was leaving a political rally in the city of Rawalpindi. At least 20 people died in the attack, local reports say. The attack has been condemned internationally. CNN reports witnesses say Bhutto was hit once in the neck and once in the chest before the bomber blow himself up as she was leaving a rally of her Pakistan People’s Party, for which she was party leader for lifetime, held ahead of elections scheduled for January 8 after years of military rule. Budapest, December 27 (MTI) – The opposition referendum on key
public sector reforms will not topple Ferenc Gyurcsany’s
Socialist-liberal government but, if successful, could force the
government to change its policies, several Socialist politicians
told MTI on condition of anonymity. “No one expects Gyurcsany to win the referendum. A lost
referendum may trigger a crisis of confidence within the party whose
popularity will remain low for a while, but the idea of ousting
