Budapest, December 22 (MTI) – Hungary’s accession into the EU’s
Schengen zone has not hindered traffic at the main crossing at
Letenye with non-EU member Croatia over the past two days, head of
the border control authority told MTI on Saturday. After the December 21 accession, Croatian citizens can still
enter Hungary without a visa using only an ID card, as was the
system before, but they have to possess an exit document stamped and
provided to them free-of-charge by the Croatian authorities, Karoly
Kovago said. Due to the new requirement the number of Croatians travelling to
Hungary with an ID card has dropped somewhat, but almost half of
them still entered with that document and the exit proof, he said. Continue »

Budapest, December 22 (MTI) – “No entry” road signs were removed
on the Hungarian-Slovak border between Satoraljaujhely (NE Hungary)
and Slovenske Nove Mesto (Slovakia) last night, just after the two
communities jointly celebrated the enlargement of the Schengen zone
of borderless travel on Friday. Rumour has it that residents of both localities, who objected
that the road had only been open to pedestrians, removed the signs. Continue »

Nagylak, December 22 (MTI) – Hungarian and Romanian customs
officers discovered 10.5 kilogrammes of heroin worth around 150
million forints (600,000 euros) in a car with Bulgarian plates, a
customs authority spokesman told MTI on Saturday. The Bulgarian driver, who attempted to enter Hungary at Nagylak
crossing station, told the officers that he was heading for
Switzerland. The officers became suspicious when they saw that the interior
of the car had been restructured and called for a sniffer dog. The
officers found 20 packets of heroin hidden inside the back seats. Continue »

Budapest, December 22 (MTI) – A Romanian national died when the
minibus he was travelling in crashed with car on motorway M1 near
Tatabanya, a disaster management spokesman told MTI on Saturday. Several other people are also believed to have been injured in
the accident, which happened when the minibus, with German plates,
crashed into a metal fence, spun several times on the road and
collided with a Romanian-registered car. The victim of the accident
was projected out of the minibus. Traffic in the Vienna direction between the 55 and 66 kilometre
marks is being rerouted, causing a tailback on the motorway. Continue »

European countries, including Hungary, which have recently joined
