Court rulings are non-political, say most lawyers

Budapest, December 12 (MTI) – The rulings, decisions, and
verdicts reached by Hungary’s courts are politically neutral, say
most Hungarian lawyers, according to a survey made public on
Wednesday by Supreme Court Chief Justice Zoltan Lomnici. Lomnici said that 72-80 percent of attorneys queried in the
representative survey said they felt that the judiciary was
non-political in its operations. Some 50-58 percent of the sample
said they felt that the courts were completely independent of all
political parties. The figure is to be expected, said Lomnici,
because parliament sets the budgets for the courts. However, one
should not mistake funding for a voice in the judicial

Gov’t to put EU treaty bill to Parliament, hopes for fast ratification

Budapest, December 12 (MTI) – The government plans to submit a
bill to ratify the European Union’s reform treaty to Hungary’s
Parliament on Friday, and hopes Hungary will be a frontrunner in its

TV anchorman assaulted, robbed (victim says attack was racially motivated)

right-of-centre all-news channel Hir TV, charged racism in a
statement he gave to the media from his hospital bed on Wednesday
night following an assault against him last night in the underground

Budapest, December 12 (MTI) – The Budapest Stock Exchange’s BUX
index closed trading at 26,751.26 points on Wednesday, up by 87.59

Budapest, December 12 (MTI) – Rolling clouds will alternate with
a measure of sunshine interspersed with snow showers or in some
places, more persistent snow. Winds will be from the north-northeast and rising from strong to
near gale force, particularly in the west and northeast. Nighttime lows should range from -3 to +2 degrees Celsius, and
daytime highs will be between +1 and +6 degrees Celsius, the

GKI Business Climate index down in Q3

Budapest, December 12 (MTI) – Hungary’s Business Climate Index,
a gauge of sentiment felt by 1,500 businesses throughout the country
and measured by economic think tank GKI, came to 38.2 in the third
quarter of 2007, down from 56.1 in Q1 and 40.6 in Q2, GKI president
