sunshine are in the offing for Wednesday, and rain is unlikely. Breezes will be from the north-northwest and moderate. Nighttime lows are expected to range from – 4 to +1 degrees
Celsius, and daytime highs will be between +2 and +7 degrees

Public sector wage agreement reached for 2008, says gov’t official

Budapest, December 4 (MTI) – Public sector wages will go up by
an average of five percent next year, a senior Labour Ministry
official announced on Tuesday, after tripartite negotiations between
the central government, local governments and employee unions ended
shortly after 1800 hours local time. The meeting of the National Public Sector Interest Conciliation
Council ended after the central government and unions came to
agreement, and local governments raised no objection, said State

Chief of staff has talks in Israel

Jerusalem, December 4 (MTI) – Hungary’s Armed Forces Chief of
Staff Andras Havril met Gabriel Ashkenazi, his Israeli counterpart
in Jerusalem on Tuesday, and talks between the two focused primarily
on combating terrorism and topical issues of armed forces
development. Havril and Askenazi discussed modern military management options
and network capabilities as well. They also briefed each other about
current armed forces restructuring efforts. Havril, who has been in Israel since Sunday on a four-day visit,

Budapest Mayor meets President Yushchenko in Kiev

Kiev, December 4 (MTI) – Mayor of Budapest Gabor Demszky held
talks with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko in Kiev on Tuesday,
the Mayor’s press office told MTI. The two discussed setting up a Ukrainian House in Budapest and
erecting a statue of Hungarian 19th century poet Sandor Petofi in
Kiev, counterpoising a statue of Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko
unveiled in Budapest this summer.    Demszky and Yushchenko agreed that native-language education of
ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia (E Ukraine) was exemplary.
Yushchenko said he was ready to consider measures to help ethnic
Hungarians improve the Ukrainian-language skills to position

Constitutional Court blames MPs for failure to regulate rival referendum questions

Budapest, December 4 (MTI) – Hungary’s Constitutional Court (AB)
ruled on Tuesday that Parliament had failed to regulate the
relationship between rivaling referendum questions submitted on the
same issue but at different times. The court called upon MPs to put an end to this unconstitutional

Four health-care projects get EUR 35m from EU funds

Budapest, December 4 (MTI) – Four health-care projects have been
granted European Union funding totalling 8.8 billion forints (about
35 million euros) for the next three years, Health Minister Agnes
Horvath said on Tuesday. The funding will be spent on modernising two hospitals in
Budapest, developing ambulance management and creating a health care
human resource monitoring system, Horvath said. The projects should be completed by 2010, she added. Continue »
