Gov’t lowers public finance deficit, ups inflation forecast for 2007-2011

Budapest, (MTI) – The government has lowered its
projection for 2008′s public finance deficit, calculated with EU
methodology, from 4.3 percent to 4.0 percent in an update of its
convergence programme for 2007-2011, the finance ministry announced

Liberals backing EconMin candidate

some rain in the morning. Southerly, south-westerly winds may gust
to high. Lowest night-time temperatures will be between -2 and +3 degrees

FinMin envisages rate cut by 1 percentage point next year

Budapest, (MTI) – Results of the government’s
austerity programme may enable the National Bank to cut its base
rate by one percentage point before the end of next year, Finance
Minister Janos Veres said on Friday. Talking on a business radio channel, Veres reiterated that the
base rate had been reduced to the current 7.5 percent as a result of
the austerity programme in two steps during the last nine months. Veres confirmed that the government was committed to going on
with its programme seeking to restore the balance of public finance,
and would reduce the general government deficit by a further two

Budapest court begins hearing lawsuit against PM, FinMin

EU military committee chair visits helicopter base in C Hungary

Budapest, (MTI) – Hungary is a reliable member of
the European Union and its activities contribute to the
implementation of the EU defence policy, the chairman of the EU
military committee said on Friday. General Henri Bentegeat said, after visiting a helicopter base
in Szolnok (C), that Hungary’s army meets all the expectations
associated with a modern military. Bentegeat in the past two days
overviewed Hungary’s role in European defence and discussed plans
related to the settlement of Kosovo. While in Szolnok, he watched a Gripen fighter and Mi-24
helicopters in flight and a demonstration by two special units for
